4Great Starter Bow  Oct 30, 2010 By Antigrav01
I have recently re-kindled my interest in archery and randomly found this listing for the bow I bought years ago so I thought id write a review for it.
The brace height is 8 1/4 inches, draw weight about 35lbs at 28 inches, and the total length when strung is 56 inches (60 when unstrung). I managed to pull the bow back to 31 inches (with the help of my legs) without it cracking or even making a sound, so that should give you some peace of mind if your draw length is just at 28 inches. Fiberglass is more durable than wood in that respect, but I wouldnt advise pulling it back any farther than 31 inches.

-Appearance-
Its a basic, slightly recurved flatbow made of fiberglass. It is green with a black rubber handle and has "Bear" written on one of the limbs. The handle has notches above the arrow rest which I assume are supposed to be some sort of sights...though I have no idea how to use them. Im instinctive anyway. Sights are for guns. This is indeed a right handed/left handed bow. Simply flip the bow over to switch between hands or shooting styles.

-Pros-
The bow shoots well with mild shock, not too much. The draw is smooth.
The string is very sturdy and doesnt look like I will ever need to replace it. With my amount of use anyway.
While there is a mark on the rubber shelf, it hasnt worn away even after all this time.
If I had some proper arrows, I feel like I could get some very consistent groups. Even using 2nd-hand arrows with half destroyed fletchings, it does pretty well.

-Cons-
The rubber grip/shelf is glued very weakly to the bow. This isnt a big deal, I just tied it with some leather strips. Looks better, feels better, and is secure. Some people might prefer it comes glued on properly though. I could have glued it, but like I said, the leather makes it much more comfortable and of course looks better.
The grip is small, only 3 3/4 inches from shelf to shelf. I have small hands, so it fits me perfectly, but the average to large sized adult might have some issues.

I feel I should also address and correct some things posted in another review of this bow. I dont mean to be stingy, but misinformation about a product isnt a good thing when you are thinking of buying it.
- This is NOT a composite bow. It is (aside from the rubber grip and 2 string nocks) a single piece of solid fiberglass. Its a recurve flatbow, but not a composite recurve as he stated. Composite bows are made of multiple materials laminated together, usually horn, sinew, and bamboo. Though nowadays, thats not always the case.
- It was mentioned that a string nock came off the bow due to it being glued on very poorly. This isnt a permanent issue and can be easily solved either by simply reglueing them on or filing/sawing nocks directly into the bow! Bows are perfectly functional self-nocked and have been since their creation. I havent had this happen anyway, so maybe it was just him. Its definitely something to mention (especially considering that it is dangerous) and should effect the bow's overall rating, but dont give the entire bow 1 star without addressing anything else.

Oh just some extra info for ya. When using an eastern shooting style (arrow on drawing hand side as opposed to bow hand side) with a thumb draw, it felt...awkward. Im not entirely sure why. It simply feels better to shoot this bow western style (arrow on bow hand side as opposed to drawing hand side). When I shoot western style, I use 2 fingers (arrow between pointer and middle) as this seems to be the most accurate way for me. Give this a try if youre having accuracy troubles. No guarantees it will help, but its worth a shot.

For someone who is new to archery and/or wants something that requires almost no maintenence, I recommend this bow. Just be aware that you will have to secure the handle some way and to check the string nocks just in case. Ill be happy to answer questions you may have, so please inquire about this bow first before you rate my review as unhelpful.

EDIT: I just realized that this bow does come with a different shelf glued on (again, very weakly) to the rubber grip. Feel free to shoot some arrows off it, but I guarantee you will rip it off after a few shots. The accuracy is so much better using the rubber shelf than that crappy little piece of plastic. I would have mentioned it before, but its been so long since I first bought this bow and forgot I even had those things on it.

EDIT (3-6-12): Im reading all my reviews and noticed on this one that the posted picture is no longer of the bow I originally ordered or of what im reviewing here. Very similar, but not the same. Im having computer problems (im not typing on my own at the moment), but promise to take a picture of the bow I am talking about in this review and post it on here. Why they decided to change the picture to something different, I have no idea. Once I post the picture, I make no guarantees it will be what you receive. However, I do feel it necessary to show you what im actually reviewing as, once again, the picture shown has been changed to a different bow.

5Good bow.  Jul 03, 2011 By Amazon Rocks "Shawn"
I purchased this bow on a whim. The price and manufacturer were both major factors. Bear makes a good bow. This particular one is quite powerful for what it is. It's certainly not a toy. This bow is more than capable of bringing down an animal with the appropriate arrow. So far it appears to be well made. I've had no problems with any part of it coming loose. There are some reviews about certain parts of the bow falling off or becoming very loose. I've fired this weapon at least 150 times and even tried to pry off the arrow rest to no avail. I use a 32" fiberglass arrow with it for target practice and a 32" carbon fiber arrow for hunting. I fired a 28" wooden arrow with it and it splintered upon hitting the target. This bow would be appropriate for age 15 and up. Like I said, it's not a toy.

4Great for starting archers!  Oct 10, 2011 By Nath
So I picked this up because a few friends and I had started an archery club at our school, I must say after using it today for about 4 hours straight of continuous shooting (probably around 200-300 arrows in total) I was quite satisfied.

PROS
1. The product arrived at my doorstep within two days of me placing the order (I used standard shipping)
2. The bow is functional as a both left and right handed bow (great for getting everyone a chance to use)
3. The bow has GREAT draw weight to it for a bow of this price, that being said THIS BOW IS NOT A TOY, I was able to pierce straight through a 4 inch thick target from about 20 yards away WITH A BLUNT ARROW, once again this being said DO NOT MESS AROUND, safety is important whenever doing archery and this bow, although not the most powerful, is nothing to joke around with.
4. Consistency, after reading some of the reviews I was a little worried about how this bow would fair, however, the bow could consistently put arrows through targets without any problems at all.
5. Works great with all types of arrows, I shot it with both heavy wood and lighter aluminium arrows and the results were the same (you may have to aim a little high with heavier arrows, but no surprise there).

CONS
1. Some construction could have been done with higher care, at the very end of my day of shooting, one of the hooks where the arrows rest before firing snapped off due to it being glued on poorly, it was not a big deal since you could simply rest the arrows on the rubber grip instead, however, still worth noting.

All in all, a great buy for someone just starting out. I wouldn't recommend it however for smaller kids for the simple fact that 35 pounds of draw weight might be a little difficult for younger guys/girls. Look forward to shooting more with it in the future.

4Great bow for the price  Jan 18, 2012 By Renata F. Caldwell
I love this bow, but I shot it so much that the shelf above the grip rubbed a blister on the back of my thumb. I peeled off the grip from the back side of the bow, turned it upside down and put it on from the front side of the bow with gorilla glue. Old and new exposed glue makes it not as pretty but the grip fits my hand much better this way. Functionality is all I'm interested in.

I highly recommend this bow. I looked on other sites and compared the other bows on Amazon and don't think you'll find a better bow for the price.

5Great "Varmint" Bow  Nov 24, 2011 By YorkDork
I bought this to deal with pests and small game. After purchasing and hunting some small game. My friend purchased one (after seeing mine) and has taken it coyote hunting. He says it's great. Using this particular bow, from a distance of 100 yards, I could get a decent grouping on a 6in diameter target (this is the size used for COMPOUND BOW competitions). I didn't like the color so I painted mine black. Overall this is a fantastic weapon. However the grip is not the one shown in the picture. The real grip is at this link[...]. Even though it's synthetic it can still get a memory bend so make sure you unstring it after use. The Bear Archery website says it's got a 30-35 lbs draw weight, but using 31 and 32 inch arrows the weight becomes 40-43 lbs. The website also states that it's for children sixteen and up. I'm 15 and I'm nearly six feet tall, but the website is right this is not to be used lightly. It can have devastating effects on flesh, SO BE CAREFUL. The bad part about the bow is on the grips it comes with a couple of cruddy standard arrow rests. Mine fell off within a week of shooting (However I constantly shoot, grouping six arrows, into one bullseye, from 20 yards means that you have become "an expert" taditional bowman, STILL USE CAUTION) My target is set up with synthetic wood behind it and when I was first getting a feel for the bow the arrows would pass through the wood. DANGEROUS BUT GREAT USE CAUTION
